The Book
The Constrained Founder
The Constrained Founder is for people trying to build something under real-life constraint.
If your life keeps interrupting your business, most advice will tell you that you’re the problem. This book is the opposite of that.
It is for parents, carers, side-hustlers, introverts, neurodivergent people, people dealing with health issues, and anyone who is tired of being told a business only counts if you sacrifice the rest of your life to it.
Most business advice assumes there is still spare time to find, more energy to squeeze out, and a calm, uninterrupted week somewhere just around the corner. But what if the hours are already spoken for? What if life is already full, and you are still trying to build something anyway?
Open your phone and it is the same script on repeat. Post every day. Get on video. Build your personal brand. Same message, different packaging.
This book is not a step-by-step business plan. It is here to do something more basic, and for most people, more necessary.
Here is what it aims to change:
- It helps you stop treating normal life as proof that you are failing.
- It gives you language for the gap between mainstream advice and a real, interruption-filled week, so you stop blaming yourself for it.
- It pulls apart the “mindset, discipline, consistency” story when it is being used to blame people for problems that are not really about mindset, discipline, or consistency.
- It helps you think more clearly, instead of making decisions from guilt or frustration.
- It changes what success means when you are building under constraint, so you can build something that fits your life instead of trying to escape it.
I wrote this because I got tired of watching the same thing happen: good people, decent ideas, and plans that collapse the moment Tuesday arrives. I have been building businesses for nearly forty years, I have six children in a blended family, and my brain has never once behaved itself on command. This book exists because I needed this written down properly, and it did not exist anywhere else.

I'll let you know when there's a new essay, book news, or something useful to share about The Misfit Engine™.
